Pictures from the Faeroes

June 06 saw myself (Simon), Max, Kay, Alistair and Gaz taking off to the Faeroes Islands, NW of Scotland. We departed from Maryport on Monday 12th June, and made landfall in Vagur, on the southernmost island of Suduroy, 61/2 days later, on Sunday 17th June.

We fell a litle short of our expected landfall of Thorshavn, due to weather and lack of diesel! We'd run out of diesel as we rounded St Kilder, still with 250nM to go, thanks to having no wind whatsoever after we'd made the turn up the North Channel. Oh Well...

Day 4 saw us pass the 600nM mark... so we celebrated in style, with a little glass of bubbly. We'd run out of diesel by this stage, so we were effectively drifting. Here's Max taking a sun sight. We got quite good at it by the end of the 3 weeks, though typically, we very rarely saw the sun when we needed to. At one point, our calculations put us only 4 miles from our actual position. The next time I did a fix, I was somewhere down in the Bristol Channel!

After 4 or 5 days at sea, you start to think somone peeling potatoes would make a nice picture. Cheers Kay!One of only 2 sensets we saw, but they were quite stunning. The second sunset was used to check our compass deviation. All good fun.

At last... landfall. Typically, the weather had blown up (though it had died down again when this photo was taken) which made the decision to pull into Vagur instead of Thorshavn. It was this big! says Gaz whie Max looks stunned at the thought of having a whisky at 8 am on a Sunday morning. My fault, I confess... it seemed like a good thing to do at the time!

This is a typical view of the Faeroe Islands... absolutely stunning. The west side, which we didn't get to has massive cliffs the entire length of almost every island. Finally made it to Thorshavn, the capital city (!) of the Faeroes. It's an incredibly friendly place. Within minutes of tying our lines a local guy had come along and given us a cake to have without tea. How civilised! We were actually adopted by several people, one of which was Kristin, who even fed us a local supper of Olds Cod and Sheeps Grease. Don't Ask. If you ever see it on a menu anywhere, don't order it. You've been warned.

Yes, the roof is grass. The traditional roofing material. This one is in fact the Prime Ministers house, which is nestled among the houses of parliament. No joke. If you look closely at the clock, it says 12 o'clock. Midnight. Sat in the cockpit of good old Misbehaviour, at midnight, in the blazing sun shine (ok.. not quite blazing, but you get the idea). This was as dark as it got until we got back to Scctland

Back to Scotland, and back to getting a hammering as we beat down the Minch, to get the crew on land. Max & I had to sail Misbehaviour from Ullapool all the way back to Maryport without a scrap of help from the others. Apparantly they had work to go to or something... it's just plain selfish if you ask me.
